Carbon graphite piston rings are used in design with carbon graphite guide rings. The function of the piston rings is to seal the high-pressure gas or fluid, and the function of the guide rings is to hold the piston centered with respect of the cylinder bore. The guide ring is designed to be in close contact with the piston and housing bore. Guide rings can be either segmented or solid rings, and typically include butt or overlapping joints.
