Welding Information
The information on this page is an introduction to PFA and polypropylene welding techniques used by Entegris. It explains one method that can be used to join injection molded, rotomolded or extruded pieces to create a new part using PFA sheet stock or customize a part using welding rod.
Because it is PFA material, our welding rod is ideal in high purity and corrosive chemical environments. Common applications include:

Welding Equipment
To weld PFA rod, a welding tool is required. The welding tool (gun) is available from Laramy Products of Lyndonville, Vermont. There are several models available. The model best suited for use is the model #30-10. There are 17 gun tips available, and the tip most commonly used by Entegris is the NHS-1. The gun looks similar to a soldering iron but uses forced hot air to fuse rather than iron-to-material contact. Further information about the kit may be obtained from:

Operation
Welding is done by preheating the material with a hot air stream. The gun heats the air, but an air source must be provided by the gun. The welding rod is also preheated by the gun. When the materials are ready to be welded, the gun tip is simply run along the area where the weld is desired, feeding the welding rod manually in the process. The welding technique for PFA is similar to that used for polypropylene. However, the fusing temperature is much higher and added measures must be taken to ensure adequate ventilation.
